KENT HOLLOWAY's technique is based on the European tradition of layers of glazes resulting in a luminous
depth, which, because of the drying process, takes many hours to complete.
"After seeing the great realist art in Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid and
Florence, I've tried to equal those amazing masterpieces. This turned out
to be more difficult than I imagined, but I've never quit trying. Maybe
if I live long enough to paint another couple hundred paintings, I'll do one
that will stand the test of time."
Holloway, a native of Portland and art graduate of Lewis & Clark College,
continued his art education by traveling extensively in Europe in the 1960s.
Art sales and patronage in San Francisco financed his studies where he
eventually settled and showed paintings at The California Palace of the
Legion of Honor and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has maintained a
studio on Bandon's South Jetty since 1988. Locally, he has had one man shows
at the Coos Art Museum in 1991 and 2000. Also in 2000, Raincoast Arts
Gallery showed the Coquille River series, many painted from his floating,
homemade painting studio in Prosper called Holloway's Hooch. Last year he
completed a 21' by 3' mural in the new third floor lounge of Harp's
Restaurant, depicting Bandon's waterfront before the 1936 fire. He
occasionally plays solo 1930's-40's traditional swing piano at Harp's and,
if you encourage him, sings a hot number too. Caffé Santoro and Bandon
Gourmet in Bandon and Raincoast Arts Gallery in Langlois exhibit his work. A
few art prints are available for sale. For information call 541.347-3495.
